I'm no longer a favorite.

I liked being a favorite. Now it's Jamie.  Who couldn't even race when it started.  How did she get to be so good? I practiced constantly.

Someone sent me 500 galleons, which sort of cut the sting of losing Hunter his money. I mean look at how much he invested in the horse, and I won him hardly any money at all!  He and Pembroke were very sweet to take me out to dinner.  My face and wrists still kind of hurt though, and I'm feeling underwhelmed by classes.  Blah blah blah.  Go talk to Snape, he's so wonderful he got promoted ahead of me right out of a shady past.  Yes, I'm feeling pissy and bitchy.

I hope this depression turns into me wanting to kick ass next year, but I feel like right now everyone is probably laughing at me.  Oh there goes Nerys Llewelyn, who thought she could actually accomplish something. Ha ha ha, giant loser.

I need to do something to cheer up. Stat.  Maybe I'll go snuggle with Chris.  He has such a different perspective and I end up feeling better for hearing it.  Besides, he's the best thing in my life.  I can focus on what I'm grateful for when I'm around him.

You know, when that red light hit, it depressed everyone else.  Me?  I wasn't depressed, but here is the sum total of what happened:

1) I took a train out to London to go shopping.  Train broke down.  Spent entire shopping time sitting on train while the nice engineer replaced seals and magical spark generators and all manner of other things.

2) Ate something that made me sick.  Really, really, really, puke everywhere sick.

3) Stolen purse.  Contained all of my identification papers and bank information.  Spent next day changing out said information.

I might have to stick myself to March Shield by the hip.

On the good side, Issa came forward with the true identity of the cheater.  I need to talk to Hunter, then we'll go confront him.

Rules for Betting on Flying Horse Races

1. @mail Rane with justified betting power.

Betting power then translates to a number of galleons recorded in your betting "bank."  Bet and lose over this number and IC consequences that must be followed are @mailed.  If the player fails to observe these consequences in documentable RP they will be banned from all future events, no exceptions.  Rewards for successful bets are @Mailed as well.  Your betting pool can go up simply by investing the bet back into the pot, but you must @Mail Rane if you're doing this. Otherwise it just keeps shrinking.  This pool assumes this is money you have free when all other expenses in your life are paid.

The betting levels are:

Fantastic: 50 galleons (roughly $500) is how much you can afford to bet and lose.
Great: 40 galleons (roughly $400).
Good: 30 galleons (roughly $300).
Fair:  20 galleons (roughly $200).
Budget Better: 10 galleons (roughly $100).
Lightweight: 5 galleons (roughly $50).
Dabbler: 2.5 galleons (roughly $25).
Super Dabbler:  1.5 galleons (roughly $15)
Diet Coke of Dabblers: 0.5  galleons (roughly $5).

Students age 17 or older may bet.

Fail to @mail your justification and guess where you start? YEP!  Diet Coke of Dabblers unless I'm feeling nice. ;)

You may bet over your betting level at any one event, BUT remember that ICC will hit if you fail to recoup or exceed your full betting pool by the end of the event.

2.  There are three betting games available.

A. Double or Nothing:  Bet any amount.  Pick the winner.  Take double your bet if you lose.
B. Third Eye Trifecta: Bets start at 100 galleons.  The House also places a bet.  The number of bets placed becomes the Pot.  Predict 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in order and win the entire pot.
C. Place Pick:  Place pick is only available when there are 5 or more competitors.  Make a bet of any size.   Pick one horse, and if that horse places in either 1st, second, or third your return is 1.5 of your bet.

Bets will be taken in the first half hour of any race event.

Race Rules

Here are the rules for the horse races.

You need to imagine a circular track and note there are 4 obstacles around the track.  There are going to be a number of trips around the track.  I haven't trialed and errored enough to get to anything other than 5, a number I pulled out of the air.  I will adjust upward or downward as necessary to get it right.  Until then just assume that, ICly, races come in different lengths.

Roll #1:  Determines Placement

How it works:   I will roll your character's dodge (on the Q&D) modified by your horse's speed.

Example:

Player A rolls 53 (success).

Player B rolls 7 (success).

Player C rolls 96 (fail).

Player D rolls 44 (success).

Player E rolls 69 (fail).

(Success or failure depends largely on your stat).

Going into the race, the placement will be:  B-D-A-E-C.

Roll #2:  First Obstacle

How it works: I will roll your Q&D Dodge modified by your horse's agility.

Determines:
* Whether you get through the obstacle at all.
* Bonuses or Penalties:
* Critical Success:  Keep 1st place automatically or you get a chance to "Burst" roll (Dodge + modified by horse's Endurance) to move up one place.
*Critical Failure:  Auto-move to the back of the line while getting out of the obstacle you got stuck in.
*Fail: Auto-move back one place because of slow pace of getting through the obstacle.
*Success:  Hold place.

Example:

Racer B rolls a 99 (Crit Fail)
Racer D rolls a 3 (Crit Succ)
Racer A rolls a 14 (Succ)
Racer E rolls a 89 (fail)
Racer C rolls a 40 (Succ).

Racer D gets a "burst" and succeeds.

The new order is:    D-A-C-E-B.

B moves to the back of the line and D managed to burst right into first place.  A and C held place, but because B moved all the way back, third and fourth became second and third.  E did nothing in particular special and technically moved back a place too, but because B already took last with his critfail E sits right there in 4th anyway.

Roll #3: Burst Attempt

Of course, D already got a burst attempt -- that was a bonus attempt for his great roll at roll #2.  But now everyone gets a chance to "burst."   Same roll: Dodge modified by Endurance.  Why Endurance?  Because you're basically pulling on the horse's resources over and above what the horse can give speedwise normally.

Racer D rolls a  60, success.
Racer A rolls a 57, success.
Racer C rolls an 8, success.
Racer E rolls a 14, success.
Racer B rolls a 97, fail.

So what happens here?

As it happens, everyone keeps their place, though the first four racers drew neck and neck briefly before settling back into place, and Racer B apparently whipped out his magitendo game elf.

Roll #4:  Obstacle #2, same rules as Obstacle #1.

Roll #5: Burst Attempt #2.

Roll #6: Obstacle #3.

Roll #7: Burst Attempt #3.

Roll #8: Obstacle #4.

Roll #9: Round end/start: Speed roll.

At this point, only a crit succ, crit fail, or a fail matters.  At a crit succ you can move up one place.  At a fail you move back a place. At a crit fail you move back 2 places.  Speed is important but at this point it's all about momentum.  Which is why, ladies and gentlemen, buying a Granian was not an automatic pass to win these races.

*If you do not have stats on the Q&D, don't worry, I will give you some.  Also, riding helps Dodge for those who are not already capped out -- so yes, there is room for advancement. All current horses for sale were sold "at potential" which means they don't advance while I try to figure out some nifty horse training system that could potentially mess with stats.  Betting rules in the next post.

The farther I get into this racing hobby the more exciting it is.  My beautiful Abraxan, March Shield.  I know what Chris says, but I know in my heart she's the one who is going to carry me through to the finish line.

And I'd better do better than getting stuck in the first obstacle. I'd better be good -- I feel like Chris would have wanted to buy the horses anyway, but I also feel like he's counting on me.

Selene Sterling seems like a nice lady, but I wonder what was troubling her so?  Perhaps it was personal.  It's been some time since I've been out with anyone socially.  Usually the boundaries of my ill winds kept me at home with Nelson.  I suppose Chris is busting me out of my shell -- he's shown me that anyone who truly loves me can weather the bumps and bruises.

Speaking of which, I can't afford to spend the whole Christmas season practicing my horse racing.  I've got lesson plans to get back to.

Syllabus

Class: Potions
Professor: Nerys Llewellyn
Textbooks: As in the Lexicon.

Essay Policy:  I do not have a lot of time to read essays these days.  I would much prefer to make my character available to you so that you may RP with her. Potions are a hands-on affair. If you have knowledge to demonstrate you may demonstrate it ICly for possible point reward.  The essay system can be a little skewed simply because it rewards only those who have the time and writing talent to put something together.  You can also ask Nerys for extra-credit /projects/ which she will assign on a case by case basis, to be used as an additional RP opportunity.

In-Class Disasters:  You will note some of these classes have "in class" disasters next to them. Disasters in class were a big part of the HP theme and I have sought to incorporate this into the classroom environment by having things go wrong from time to time.  This is in part because Nerys herself is unlucky (she has to take a potion to keep her luck normal, but the ingreedients are expensive and the brew is difficult and it doesn't always work as well as it should).  This is also because potions are so delicate, and a lot of times people want to RP doing really really well without RPing the more interesting results of things going wrong. They're afraid to stretch their wings for fear of messing over the professor, but I am going to let you know when an in-class disaster is ok on my syllabus.

The proceedure is as follows. Some of these disasters are pre-planned as to their effects. If you want to be a cause or catalyst for the disaster you should page or @mail me to volunteer. Otherwise Peeves, NPCs, or Nerys herself will be the cause.  Some of them are a little more open and may even require an app. Make sure you have spoken to me about RPing the disaster before you make your character the cause of one or RP permenant effects from one.  RPing reaction to or affect by the disaster where appropriate is always allowed (and I will let you know what is appropriate and how long it shall last in scene).  It is also alright to escape the worst of the effects of the disaster (in some cases it will be impossible for /everyone/ to suffer the disaster) but where the disaster effects the whole room I hope you will come prepared to join in the fun. Still, even if the disaster effects the whole room you will certainly be OOCly allowed to opt-out if you so desire, with graceful IC exits or through other means. :)

Well, cousin Myrddin showed up today. I thought just for a visit. How silly! How goofy of me! No, he thought some sort of ravening cat with potion stuck all in his fur was all my fault.  Well bah. At least he settled in to have a decent visit when he was done.  It would be nice if anyone in the family --

Oh forget it.  I have a CV to put around. At least he was very kind in expressing his confidence that I'll get a new job, as Endotech is going so far downhill that my boss now communicates to me via his secretary.  Never a good sign, never a good sign at all.  This research is not precisely easy, though.  I rather resent having to look for a new career path.  Still, I've applied some places nobody will ever expect.

I want to go spend time with my gentleman caller now.
